In line with the ASA’s National Water Polo initiatives, the Region has implemented the following pathway as requested by the National Water Polo Management Board.
There are four levels to the National Performance Pathway:
Level 1 = Club Programme - will underpin the Academy Programme and be the main stay of training for all athletes.
Level 2 = Academy Programme - this is the first step onto the talent pathway, which is made up of two stages:
- Regional Academy - monthly training within the Region
- National Academy - quarterly training alongside National Squad weekends
Regional Academy: This is a monthly traiining programme where players train as part of a regional squad. Training sessions will be delivered by the Region and will include 1.5 hours of water time alongside at least 90 minutes' land training. Funding for these sessions will come from the athletes and backed up by the Region when needed if possible. Cost will be £5 per session.
NB: It has also been decided by the Region to keep the Friday night sessions running as part of the Regional Academy Programme at Djanogly, Northampton and Walsall and these will become the Regional Satellite Centres that feed into the monthly Regional Academy Programme for players born 2001,2002, 2003 and 2004. Prices per term vary at each centre.
Selection to the Regional Satellite Centres is as follows:
Djanogly - Friday 16th September Land 20.00hrs Pool 20.30hrs - 22.00hrs. Contact Melanie Goose by email to
Walsall - Friday 9th & 16th September at 18.15hrs - 19.45hrs. Contact Gary Tonks by email to
Northampton - Friday 16th September from 18.00hrs. Times vary on age. Contact Jon Lane by email to
National Academy: This is the next step attended by selected athletes alongside the Regional Programme. NB Any athletes selected as part of the National Squads Programme are not eligible to be part of the National Academy Programmes, which will ensure a wide bas of talent selection. There will be 3 sessions a year and are by invitation only. Catering for players just below the England Programmes.
The National Academies will run as follows:
- Four squads - U14 boys, U14 girls, U16 boys, U16 girls
Level 3 = The National Squad Programme - this is for players selected to train with the England Squad under 17, under 19 or Senior squads.
Level 4 = Team GB - competing in formal international competition.
